પ્રાચીન ગુજરાતને મોર્ય વંશ દ્વારા શાસન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. સમ્રાટ ચંદ્રગુપ્ત મૌર્યે ગુજરાતમાં ઘણા રાજ્યો જીતી લીધા, જ્યારે તેમના પંડિત, રાજા અશોક, ગુજરાતમાં તેમના ડોમેનને વિસ્તૃત કર્યા. પ્રથમ ત્રણ મોરિયાનો શાસન મહત્વપૂર્ણ હતો, પરંતુ 232 બી સીમાં મોર્ય સામ્રાજ્યના મૃત્યુ સાથે, મૌર્ય સામ્રાજ્ય વિખેરી નાખવાનું શરૂ થયું, જેના પરિણામે રાજકીય બદનામ થયો. શુરગાંજે, મૌર્યના સફળ થયા, રાજકીય એકતાની ઝલક જાળવવા માટે અસફળ પ્રયત્નો કર્યા.
