Comparatives and Superlatives as Modifiers

The comparative kind is restricted to evaluating two issues whereas the superlative kind compares greater than two issues.

Examples:

  • Abu’s older camel died final week.
  • (This sentence says that Abu has two camels, one in all which died final week. Older modifies the camel that died.)
  • Abu has the oldest camel within the desert.
  • (Right here the superlative oldest is used, as there are greater than two camels within the desert. Oldest modifies camel within the sentence.)

The phrase very might be an adjective or an adverb. We use it right here as an adverb to change an adjective or an adverb, however, we can’t use it to change comparatives and superlatives.

Examples:

  • Right: Abu’s camel may be very previous.
  • (Very modifies adjective previous.)
  • Right: Abu rides his camel very slowly.
  • (Very modifies adverb slowly.)
  • Incorrect: Abu’s camel could be very older than his uncle’s camel.
  • (Very cannot modify comparative adjective older.)
  • Incorrect: Abu rides his camel very extra slowly.
  • (Very can’t modify a comparative adverb [more].)
